“We’re so awkward! ”“We’re not photogenic!” These are two “warnings” I often get from couples I photograph that always end up being 100% false! This is what I heard before Emma and Nick’s Mount Lemmon engagement.
But I get it. Being in front of the camera CAN feel awkward. That’s real. Here’s how I help my clients embrace the awkwardness, settle into their skin, and feel comfortable.
Firstly, it’s about you. You and your partner. It’s about you and the person you love more than anything. The two of you became a couple without my help. You flirted with each other without my help. You had your first kiss without my help. Oh, I’m pretty sure you got engaged without my help, too 😉 You have your own unique ways of showing each other you love and care for each other…that exists without my help. Photographing you means paying attention to the connection that already exists between you and encouraging it.
Practical things that help:
-music!! I love playing music during my engagement sessions. It helps the three of us feel like we don’t have to fill every moment of silence 😂 and I’ve found that it helps foster a natural comfort and looseness in your body.
-let’s do something fun beforehand! Whether that’s meeting to chat first, a drink, or stopping to get a cookie (that’s what Emma, Nick and I did!) Having a little bit of time before the shoot helps ease the nerves.
Also, I’m a weird too!! Some people are shocked to hear that I’m not naturally extroverted! Being “on” during shoots can get tiring – I am a human too! I fumble over words and poses and have an awkwardness all of my own. Let’s all embrace it!!
As a wedding and engagement photographer, I don’t have expectations for you other than for you to be yourself! I’ll be there with my camera capturing all that natural goodness 🥰
More sweetness from Emma and Nick’s engagement session on Mount Lemmon.
