Kate and Jacob’s Joyful Autumn wedding at Tohono Chul.
If you’ve ever been to Tucson in the Fall, you know the magic. There’s golden light filtering through desert mesquites, warm days and crisp evenings. All the colors seem to pop even more against the sandy-colored backdrop. Kate and Jacob chose the perfect time and place for their heartfelt, family-filled celebration in one of Tucson’s most beautiful desert garden wedding venues of Tohono Chul.
Kate and Jacob started their wedding day surrounded by all their favorite people. Instead of keeping things quiet, both the bride and groom they invited their entire wedding party, plus their beloved nieces and nephews, to get ready with them. The nieces received the full treatment of hair and makeup and manicures to rival a day at the spa and even helped Kate zip up her wedding dress. These moments of togetherness were my favorite to capture.
Kate first noticed Jacob’s joy and the way it seemed to radiate from him. That and his kind heart. They met in person after four months of FaceTime calls, and within minutes of a big hug and first kiss, Kate felt completely safe and at home. “From the start I knew our weirds matched,” she says. Jacob felt the same – instantly drawn to her playfulness and openness.
Their love story is full of adventures and quiet moments alike: long drives, crossword marathons, hiking through the desert, and cozy nights in with popcorn and Spindrift. And yes, for their first Halloween together, they dressed up as Spaghetti and Meatballs which is a testament to their shared goofiness and creativity.
Tohono Chul’s Performance Garden is the perfect place for evening wedding ceremonies. The venue’s botanical paths make the perfect backdrop for a laid-back, lighthearted fall wedding. Guests wandered past blooming desert plants to reach the ceremony site, where the sun dipped just enough to cast everything in a warm, golden glow.
Family was at the heart of this wedding day. From emotional moments walking down the aisle and hugging their parents, to kids twirling on the dance floor. Kate and Jacob’s friends and relatives were woven into every part of the celebration. This is a reflection of how deeply they value their people. They even infused their goofy side into the ceremony but giving all their guests brightly colors kazoos to play at any moment they felt joy! This made for so much laughter and fun!
As the sun dipped low and bathed the gardens in a warm golden light, cocktail hour unfolded like a scene from a desert dream. Family and friends wrapped each other in heartfelt hugs and shared moments of laughter. Kids darted among the gardens, playing games and joking with family. Guests sipped bright pink prickly pear margaritas which was a perfect nod to the Southwest. Couples and friends wandered among the natural desert landscape, stopping to take selfies against the wildflowers in bloom. It was relaxed, joyful, and every bit as vibrant as Kate and Jacob themselves.
Kate and Jacob’s wedding reception at Tohono Chul was the perfect blend of heartfelt connection and playful fun. Every detail felt like them. The tables were dotted with DIY custom potted cacti, each one a little different, reflecting the couple’s creativity and love for the desert. At every seat, guests found a personalized crossword puzzle filled with fun facts about the bride and groom, a clever nod to their shared love of word games.
The kids had their own kind of magic! Playdoh gifted by Kate and Jacob to keep little hands busy and happy. But the real magic was in the way the couple moved through the night. They made a point to say hello and share a moment with every table, making sure no one felt like just a guest. Everyone was part of their story.
When the speeches started, laughter and tears flowed in equal measure. Friends and family shared words that were both hilarious and deeply touching, painting a picture of who Kate and Jacob are as individuals and as a couple. This is one of my favorite parts of a wedding reception because everyone gets a deeper glimpse into who the couple is, how they found each other, and the joy their family and friends have in seeing them thrive together.
Then came the dance floor fueled by Jared of Old Pueblo DJ. It was funky, full, and fueled by the kind of music that made it impossible to stay seated. Guests wore fake stick-on tattoos, desserts were just as sweet and vibrant as the couple, and the hora brought the whole crowd together, honoring Jacob’s Jewish heritage. Every moment of the wedding reception carried the same warmth and playfulness that defines Kate and Jacob’s love.
I am incredibly grateful for Kate and Jacob’s trust in me as their photographer. Their celebration was the kind that reminds me why I do this work. Their love is joyfully unpolished, deeply genuine, and rooted in acceptance. This is exactly the kind of connection that’s a dream to document.
If you’re dreaming of a wedding in Tucson that blends the beauty of the desert, commnity connection, community, and silliness, this celebration is proof it can be done beautifully. Check out this wedding here for another example.
